About the Building

H. C. Baumann's masterpiece stands more than 20 stories tall, a beacon atop Russian Hill.

The then-modern skyscraper in Baumann's trademark white Churrigueresque style was Baumann's foray investing real estate after years of designing buildings for clients. His timing couldn't have been worse. Completed in 1930, at the start of the Great Depression, he lost his investment and was nearly wiped out.

The building features an elaborate frontispiece, projecting bay windows, showy soffits, ornamented spandrels, and an ornate lobby.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom had a penthouse condo in the Bellaire Tower building; he sold it in 2009.
